We have had many people inquiring about the status of the Off Leash Dog Park, so we thought we would provide an update.
With the Extreme Sleepover and Raise the Woof Fundraisers in 2012, fundraising is completed for the Dog Park. Thanks to the generosity of the community and supporters near and far, we have $20,312 raised for the Dog Park project.
The City of Meadow Lake has donated a parcel of land on the far east side of the City, near the Compost Site. For those of you who are unaware of it’s location, here is a handy map. (Dog Park is marked in red.)
Seeing as this piece of land consisted of swampy marsh, it required a great deal of back fill to transform it into usable space. The back fill was produced from various projects around the city; street repairs, digging foundations for new homes, etc, so it was only available when projects arose, which is why the development of the land is taking much longer than anticipated.
These photos were taken from the road.
These photos were taken from the top of the hill.
Now that the snow has fallen, development is on hold until spring. We are hoping to have the park up and running by Summer 2014, but this timeline depends on the City completing back filling and leveling off the land so we can get in there to install fencing.
There are several things to consider when developing a Dog Park to ensure the safety of dogs and their owners. We are researching other dog parks to see what makes them successful, and we will be applying these methods to our own park. At the end of the day it all comes down to responsible pet ownership and cooperation with the rules and regulations that will be put in place for those utilizing the dog park.
We greatly appreciate the work that has been done to date by the City of Meadow Lake, and for the support we have received by the community through our fundraising efforts. We look forward to the future development of the dog park and providing four legged community members somewhere to play and socialize with their owners and other dogs.
